Review Movie : City of God ( 2002 ) Summary & Explanation

Review Movie : City of God ( 2002 ) Summary & Explanation

An Unforgettable Journey: A City of God ( 2002 ) Movie Review

"City of god " or commonly referred to in Brazilian is Cidade De Deus which means ' City of God ' Is a Crime drama movie originating from Brazil. This tumultuous and tumultuous film is a depiction of a horrific reality that takes place in the slums of Rio De Janeiro (Brazil).  By telling the story of a very heartbreaking tragedy that occurs in the slums, the narrative in this film will lead us to a terrible vile expression of the periphery that is filled with many gangsters.

City of God is an acclaimed crime film that has earned its place in the ranks of classic movies. Featuring stunning cinematography, unforgettable characters, and a powerful story, it's no wonder this movie holds a spot as one of the greatest films ever made. In this review, we'll explore why City of God is such an important movie, and why it has become a beloved classic.

As I have stated in a previous article about a majas about worldly cinema " From the movie we learned a lot,And from the movie we could sharpen the sense of our intellectuality " Which in this City Of God movie there is a historical element that we can study from the narrative literature that we will encounter when watching it.

Captivating Visuals and Memorable Characters

One of the things that makes City of God so remarkable is its captivating visuals, which evoke a feeling of being inside this Brazilian neighborhood. The vibrant colors, busy streets and close interactions between characters bring the movie to life. We also can't forget about some of the unforgettable characters in this film, led by Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) who dreams of becoming a photographer and succeeding apart from his criminal surroundings.

The point of historical is that this movie has a narrative that is so complicated like a crime series that is packaged like a semi-autobiographical film, because this film is an adaptation of a novel published by Paulo Lins with the title 'City Of God' which was released in 1997, A novel that is honestly packaged as a non-fiction novel that turns its back on a story about the development of criminal organizations that occurred on the outskirts of Rio De Janeiro to be precise  in the western part of Cidade De Deus,Favela.

An Intense Storyline That Drives the Narrative

By telling the story of a revolution, about culture, accompanied by criminal developments in slums called Cidade De Deus (City of God), making this film has a deep historical value to the development of literature on a slum filled with gangsters, criminals and drug dealers.

If you have heard that the country of Brazil is one of the countries labeled as a country with a high crime rate it is a truth that cannot be denied anymore, Because in this film we will be faced with a terrible factual truth that has developed in the Favela slums since the 1960s.

A Momentous Journey Into The Depths Of Poverty and Violence

City of God takes viewers on a momentous journey into the depths of poverty and violence that plague Rio de janeiro’s most disheveled neighborhoods. Despite the unpleasant subject matter, director Fernando Meirelles manages to use each scene to turn up the intensity and create an enthralling story which grips viewers from beginning to end. The underlying theme that anyone can find and embrace their own courage is what ultimately makes this movie so unforgettable.

With a narrative whose focus is on one photographer named Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues), he is one of the main focuses of the character who will tell all the background of the character and the background regarding the development of criminality that occurs in Cidade De Deus (Like a living witness), The scene begins with him suddenly faced with a pinched situation between him, the Gangster and the Police who will fight with bullets, then He will lead us to flashbacks of his childhood and some of his friends who are in an environment full of criminality.

In Flashback Scene we will be introduced to 3 (Trio) tenders, namely Shaggy, Goose and clipper, These three are three amateur criminals who were used as role models in the era of rocket's childhood. The story of the three people tendering this trio will be told very tragically which later their crime story will be remembered as a trio of legends who opened the gates of the beginning of criminality in their area which later Li'l Dice (Leandro Firmino) will become an urban legend ( Local gangster character ) who becomes the antagonist character in this film.

In the scene we will be able to clearly see the role play outlined by this trio of tenders is not to kill the target they want to rob, That is the rule they guard in every robbery they go through. But as a result of their own mistakes their fate ended very badly. The narrative is quite complicated because it involves a lot of characters - the core characters of each of which will be told by the rocket so that it gives the impression as if this film is a documentary with an active narrator that tells the historical plot.

Salute to director Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund who worked on this film very neatly accompanied by visual games that are made classic like 80's movies. Inseparable from that, the flashback scene continues to move forward while telling the protagonist's core character, namely the idealistic rocket who wants to become a photographer because he doesn't like rough work and also he realizes that because of the large number of gangsters in his neighborhood, it will definitely be very easy to become a photographer who covers his own area from the inside.

That's why this movie can be said to be a Semi-Autobiographical movie, because the characters in this film are like living witnesses living in slums filled with murderers and criminality and drug trafficking who live freely. Not only that, with the Rocket character here as an important pioneer who will accompany us intellectually in conveying his life story while in the city of God, making this film even more exciting to watch.

And moreover, the script literature applied to this film is made complicated but directed, with a Plotmixed storytelling style that uses the technique of Present time (Early flash) to past time (back in time) and played into past time (from the past) to present time (to the future), Anyway, the narrative in this film will be mixed and made so wild in the next plot.

That's why City Of God has received a lot of awards because of the screen play and even more so for the Cinematography work done by Cesar Charlone made very neatly with its cold visual depiction and bokeh editing, making this film get the best editing award, namely the BAFTA Award For Best Editing. Well, even though the story based on this film is very extreme to be categorized as a Crime movie of course.

And as I said earlier about this Film, this film is a depiction of the reality that takes place in a slum with the fastest gangster development called the City Of God. It's almost like a historical movie, it's just packaged in the form of a non-fiction story that Paulo Lins said in writing the novel. For the scenes in the film, which highlight violence, (Drugs) dealers, and the systematic way this criminal works will also be highlighted quite extreme on the screen so this is what makes this film (Bad Ass ) really bokeh to watch.

As a result of this film breaking into a commercial film due to the large number of awards accompanied by criticism and audiences who gave a lot of good responses to this film, the two directors of this film also published City Of Men as a TV Series in Brazil and adapted it also into a film with the title City Of Men ( 2007 ).

Not only that, there is one allusive quote that is very inspirational and I have successfully seen from this film, namely ' If You Run, The Beast Catches you, If You Stay, The Beast eats you ' Damn, from those few sentences we can realize that this film is really extreme men, Especially if you want to know the cultural literacy of Brazil, you must watch this.

What is Psychedelic art ? | Literature of Psychedelic art

What is Psychedelic art ? | Literature of Psychedelic art

What is Psychedelic art ? | Literature of Psychedelic art
Psychedelic art by stoneeman

What does Psychedelic art mean? Have you  guys ever heard the term psychedelic before?  Maybe for some people who already know 'psychedelic' will be very related to this article. This time  stoneeman will  discuss a topic that  will  certainly  be related to the  previous stoneeman review  which discussed 'Psychedelic' in full.

Do you know what psychedelic art is?

Well, if you have ever studied what 'psychedelic' is, Psychedelic itself from its  general literature is interpreted as Mind-Manifesting which means manifesting thoughts. Not only that, Psychedelic is honestly   a sub-culture that developed as a result of experiments, exploration, which were finally manifested   in   a movement carried out by hippies (Counter-culture)  in the year  1960's in United States America.

Then came  psychedelic art which can be said to be  a  sub-genre of psychedelic that flourished in  the 1960's to the late 1970's.

You  can read  in full about the psychedelic  review below:

The word psychedelic comes from two Greek words meaning “mind manifesting.”

The beginning of the emergence of psychedelic art

Have you ever heard of hippies?  If you haven't read the  review of the 'Historic Movement  of the Hippies'.    A massive  movement called   the  pioneer ( Counter-Culture ) of  the development of psychedelic culture.

Maybe you think Psychedelic art is  part of a  music genre, indeed Psychedelic is a culture that has  gained many fields, ranging from 'Music, Art, Movie'.psychedelic itself   has  become a  culture   local in America because of the movement carried out by hippies in the 1970's, Because the movement that is filled with creativity creates new branches / fields that are created due to the  impact of  the  movement   performed by hippies in the  70's.

Psychedelic art is one of  the  fields that hippie uses in implementing its protests against the government into the  form of creative media.  At that time  hippie received a lot  of  support from musicians, artists, literati in   enlivening their movements  , because of this  is what Psychedelic can be in say it as a  culture that was inherent in the development of hippie  culture at that time.

Pioneer artist who pursued the  development of psychedelic art in  1960

To be honest there is one graphic   that you introduced psychedelic  style to art in 1922 he was William Addison Dwiggins, an American  typographic artist in   1922's (  Roots  of psychedelic art artist ). However,  the development of psychedelic art itself began to develop in the 1960's where hippies began to apply and develop  their psychedelic art  style  in the form of posters that  contained many  elements  typography & combination of  contrast colors that will soothe the eyes When looking at it, here  are some examples of  psychedelic works of hippies at that time  :

 1.Wes Wilson

wes Wilson  is  an artist who is generally known as the  father of  rock concert posters in the  1960s,He is one of the most recognized artists/  artists as   one of  the  most psychedelic poster designers famous at that time.

Here are  his works that emphasize the typographic elements and contrast colors that made the  characteristic psychedelic art at that time.

2.Stanley Mouse ( Mouse & Kelly )

Stanley  George Miller or commonly known  as stanley mouse, He was an American artist who helped pursue the  development of psychedelic art in the  1960's. Stanley mouse became famous for the  psychedelic rock concert poster  design  he made in  the 1960's for the   psychedelic band's album cover gratefull  dead, Journey,Jefferson Airplane, thirteenth Floor Elevators  .

Typical psychedelic art in  the 1960-1970's contained  in posters or album covers at that time  had a characteristic marked  with a  font shape that was made twists and turns and collaborated with contrasting   colors.

Good Psychedelic Poster Movie You Should Watch

Not only on album covers, music festival  posters, Psychedelic art in the 1960's  we can also find in  movie posters, the average  film  that uses  psychedelic posters as above is  a categorical film    psychedelic movies.  Like a psychedelic poster  marker above are some of the cult classic movies that were popular in the  late 1960-1970s.

When talking about psychedelic movie posters, coincidentally,  stoneeman has also   often discussed & provided references or information about  psychedelic  movies,  cult classic movies, you can read the reviews below  :

Best Psychedelic Movies & Cult Classic movie

1. Best Psychedelic Movies Review

2. Cult Classic Movies Review

4. Mati Klarwein

Mati Klarwein is a  painter from France who also  has a  quite unique style & is very familiar  with his work which has  a  surrealist style,If I may interpret a little about his work which is quite  phenomenal on the album abraxas which is in       released by santana  in  1970, Carlos santana used a painting made by mati for his album cover  because it   has a psychedelic  feel in the  painting.

In    his works we  can analyze that in  the  70's he had created a new formula  in the development of the  genre  of painting, even more so  against the flow  of painting. psychedelic art.  And in addition to the  three album covers made by mati klarwein  above are the best albums  you can listen to if you like jazz,   jazz fusion, funk, soul.     Klarwein's works are widely used by  musicians     cool and wild musicians such as santana who also enlivened the culmination of the hippie  cultural movement in  Woodstock in the late  1969-1970's.

As  I've explained in previous reviews of  psychedelic, Psychedelic  is a  sub-culture that  developed in the  1960's due to the creative movement of  hippies.  of course, talking about the psychedelic & psychedelic art genre will not be separated from the hippies because they were the ones who started this counterculture to their predecessors who he said were tough.

Because many get support from several  musicians / artists / artists, even some directors who also enliven the vibes of these hippies  into the  form of cinema ( film ), so that psychedelic is divided - divide into  several  scena & field.

The development of psychedelic art in the field of visual arts at that time was also referred to as pop-culture which is still developing today.

The development of Psychedelic art in modern visual design

It is  undeniable that in this modern era,  psychedelic art is not a new face  in the field of design. Psychedelic    art is  a pop trend   that existed  in the  1960's and was developed into an art culture that is still preserved today by artists/culturalists & designers.

And please note that pop culture that  already existed in the  1960's  is  a visual formula   that  is advantageous in the development of  psychedelic art today, In this modern era  psychedelic art developed  into  varied forms. If  you are a design  practitioner or observer,  of course, you  are familiar  with the term psychedelic art.

Because I  am a design activist/practitioner who likes & pursues the flow of psychedelic art, you can check it yourself on the official stoneeman Instagram  (@horcux_07).  For me in this modern era,  Psychedelic  art is a visual  that can  be combined into various design elements such as manipulation  art, surealm art,  pop art, and many others that  we can find in media like Instagram, facebook if you want to explore it.  The following  are some examples of modern psychedelic art that Stoneman made:

Self Interprestasi

If I may interpret the  notion of  psychedelic  art in the  visual art tradition  of this modern era; Psychedelic   art  is not  something that  is created because of  substance, but psychedelic art is part of what we can feel in our daily lives.  For me, the  application in  making psychedelic art is not  complicated, If you have a strong interest or feel & soul, you only need to develop a formula that already existed in the    1960's and combine them into an imaginary visual form.

Investigate The History of Hippies, Great & Creative Movements that call Counter-Cultures

What is a Hippies (Hippy) ?

A New Culture That Inspires Many Young People

Like the Title you can see above, Today Stoneeman will discuss one topic that is still related to a topic that Stoneeman has previously discussed regarding psychedelic.

Of course, in this session Stoneeman will explain in detail about a culture or culture that has existed since 1960, Like a time machine, this culture is certainly well known in various parts of the country because of its fairly progressive movement at that time.

    Hippy History

Before we get to know     more about  the  history of hippies at the beginning  of their movement, let's  first know  where  the  word hippie  began to be known  and known to many people  to date.  Generally Hippie is known as a  movement related to the  rejection of the war  that occurred in 1955  - 1975 for American involvement ( USA ) in the vietnam war  which became  a  triggering    the  hippie movement to the surface and becoming a culture that  even continues to be generations  today.

The Origin of The Term Hippie

The original of the   word hippie is taken from the term "hip" or "hep" used  by the beat  generation. Beat generation is a literary and social  movement started by  a group of young people in the  1950s through a  paper  that influences and explores culture   and  even politics  In  postwar America.

The Origin of  the Beginning of this Hippie  Movement Began

Of the few  or few people who already know about hippie or other names are hipsters, generally the hippies movement is  known and begins to  peak due to   several  incidents that  occur  as a result of the war that occurred at that  time   in  the  1940-1960s, but what  many people know is the  incident that occurred  in the  vietnam war when america interfered    In that war  and many  young people from the  American side who were victims of  the war.

But the  vietnam war was   just one of   several  forms of  protests by  young Americans at the time, Other factors  were based on  several  other  important international events.  such as the  African-American  civil rights movement in the 1950s, the Korean War ( 1950-1953  ) and the Hydrogen bomb test    in   1954.

Of the many events and incidents that occurred in  the dark era  , which became a factor to  underlie the  movement carried out by these hippies  to demand that   the American  government change the  system   - a zionist system  that harmed young people  as  well as civil society at the time.

Massive Pioneers Referred to as Beat Generation

Beat Generation is said to  be a group that pioneered the  Hippies  movement around the world.

This generation is referred to  as a group of  young people who work in the  form of  written works who voice their voices through writing to oppose  American culture  - culture and politics  at  that time is considered unsettling by young people.

This beat generation  consists of some wild  young people who take drugs for  their substance in criticizing the government. In his writings they included sexual elements  that at that time   It was very taboo for the   public to criticize the government at that time.

This Beat Generation  was originally only engaged in  literature and  the  social movement eventually expanded to other  fields such as music,  painting, etc.  following the development of protestors at that time.

The Impact of the Movement Carried Out by Hippies

The Movement of Humanity, Anti-War, Free Love And  the formation of the term Peace Love and unity is a symbol of the  movement that hippies do when voicing their voices.   Not only that due to the  widespread community and  hippie participants,  the  Hippies Movement itself has also grown to be very large and even worthy of being said  to be a  culture that was created because  resistance to the  government  at that time  which was in  full swing in  the   fight against the communists in 1960 ( USA ).

Hippies themselves voiced their   voices  not only in the form of  social movements, They voiced   their form of protest  through various fields & media which were very impactful at that time   such as :

  • Art (Starting from Style & how to use, Painting, Hippies has its own motifs in it)
  • Music
  • Film

From the much  information about hippies, surely you already know that these hippies  are counter-cullture ( or you could say the  founder of several sub-cultures that follow    the  development hippies  themselves ). Like Art, Music & Film, Hippies have their own  characteristics in  exploring media, especially art media,  so as to create new sub-genres   in each of the  fields  they use .

Hippies are synonymous with ?

Hippies is a  new cultural movement that was flattened by  young people in the early  1960s  to  voice opposition to the  old-fashioned culture of  previous generations who were only concerned with  a  profit  from the  fruits of warfare,  (   Substantially from Psychedelic Drugs ) The movement made by young people  at that time was very  creative,  the Style and the way they protested   was very  democratic.  They use   unique properties  and the decorations they wear have a deep message  such as "Love is more colorfull without war", therefore  hippies are often classified as    flower generation ( Flower Generation ).

And don't forget to characterize  hippies for men at that time  was long hair which declared a freedom of life without restrictions.

A widespread movement  to form a Culture that  is modeled by other Countries ?!

Starting from  famous musicians such as The Beatles,Gratefull Dead,Croshby Still & Nash,  The Who,Creedence Clearwater revival, Santana, Jimmi Hendrix, Janis joplin,Jefferson Airplane And Notables -  famous figures like Jack Nicholson,Jim  Carrey, Andy Warhol who joined the  vibe when the hippies  movement peaked in  1967.

Due to the  Hippies  Fever which became increasingly popular and known as a new style  that was popular at that  time  was finally noticed by musicians  - musicians and  big figures  joined the peak  atmosphere from  1967 to 1969 with the music performance of  the Woodstock festival in Bethel,New York ( 1969 ).

Because of the huge impact made by hippies and great figures and     musicians who participated in enlivening the peak vibes of hippies  fever at that time, it inspired many young people  from countries Another  to  follow the  hippies  ' style of voicing a voice to the government.

List of Musicians - musicians who participated  in the hippies movement :

  • The Beatles
  • janis joplin
  • Gratefull Dead
  • Creedence Clearwater Revival
  • The Who
  • Crosby, Stills & Nash
  • Santana
  • Jimmi Hendrix
  • Canned Heat
  • Jefferson Airplane

Hippies Culture & Style spread  to  several Europe & Asia countries, moreover  Indonesia.

Hippies Style  Fight Form in Indonesia

From several countries that followed the  development of hippies culture  in  the 1960s, young  people in  Indonesia in  the 1970s were also  influenced by new  cultures originating from America.

Although in Indonesia only adopted a handful of  some hippies cultures such as long hair and followed fashion trends that were quite unique at that time.

The form of resistance voiced by  young  people in the country at that time was  about the  government system being too tough and taking  for  granted the long-haired young people  in  the  1970s, Child -     Young Indonesians at that time voiced a nepotist and anti-criticism  government system.

At that time  even though the youth  in Indonesia only adopted hippies as  a  fashion  style, the Indonesian government in that era  considered long hair  a serious problem.  Young people with  long hair at that time  were not ignored by  the government as it is today, Because  the indonesian government system  at that time was authoritarian, the Government established a Coordinating  Board   Eradication of Long Hair  ( Bakorperagon ). The institution, which is also cooperated by  military officials tasked  with  cutting hair-  the hair of  young men who  are long on the  grounds that they are judged to be 'inconsistent   with the  identity of the  nation.

In the New  Order Era  , the young man with long and  long hair  was attached to the stigma of being declared a  criminal & rebel of the country.

Art media is the purest medium  in voicing the  voice of hippies youth at that time, it can be said that  the  hippies  movement  is the most creative   movement because it  uses art & music as  a medium They are  to explore in voicing their resistance.

From the results of ex-ploarsi and  collaboration between american artists, artists  & musicians at that time, Hippies was further divided  into several fields and groupings of each    in  each  medium they channeled. Hippie itself is a counter culture (  Counterculture  ) which has derivatives that are identical to: Psychedelic Art, Psychedelic  Music, Even Psychedelic  Movies.

I've previously discussed 'What is  Psychedelic?!' You can read the article   below  :

What Is Psychedelic Mean ?

Meanwhile, along with the development of the  Hippies  fever in 1960-1969  , there were several film directors who participated in  enlivening the hippies  fever at that time  by making  hippies films that were  averagely packed with the  Drama Musical Movies genre which was identical to   the elements of  its psychedelic.

The Development of  Hippies  Culture From the Golden Period to the Present

Starting from Art, Music and Even Film,  Hippies Culture evolved into a  broader  substance  'There are even some hippies  culturalists in the USA who  really understand the substance as  hippies  ,after they  passed through the golden age  of that era- until  now  they still adopted and made it a way to live.

Personal Understanding and Interpretation of the Hippie  Movement

The Hippies  movement itself is known as one  of the  Counter-Culture  movements that developed in the United States, this movement was born because of several underlying factors, namely freedom and way of  thinking.   The previous generation was very tough and obedient  to a  system that was contrary to the  norms of humanity at that time.

Historically,  this movement was founded by a group of  young people referred  to as Beat Generations, to fight against the previous generation  Beat Generations was born  as the antithesis of  the  previous  generation  who were in  value is too authoritarian and old-fashioned, as a result of the  radical thinking of  previous generations  blinded  by the ambition of  conquest, war and Power !     Hippies formed a movement known as the new Left   movement.
